SAVE THE VAULT !!
The limestone vault, a beautiful little building in the Newport Cemetery (behind the Baptist Church) has extensive structural damage and will have to be demolished if it is not rescued. The building dates back to 1905, over 106 years. In the front of the building double paneled doors are protected by a wrought iron gate. There is a Palladian Style window arching over the door. It is worthwhile to visit the cemetery to see the vault and the many gravestones of Newporter's who settled our town and village. It is a lovely place to walk.
A new group, The Friends of the Newport Cemetery, is being organized to raise money to preserve the vault. It is estimated that approximately $8,000 will be required to make the building sound again. All of the limestone walls need to be pointed up and stabilized. When this is accomplished a badly needed roof can be installed and the window over the entrance repaired.
Donations to a fund for preservation of the vault may be made to Sara Getman, 2672 Newport Road, Poland, NY 13431. Fund raising events are also planned to raise money for this worthwhile project. If you are interested in joining the Friends of the Newport Cemetery phone Roberta Walsh @ 845-6351 or Torrey Felio @ 845-8698.
